Located near Plaza Singapura, The Istana and The Cathay, MacDonald House has a relatively plain and unadorned facade that may not be particularly striking. However, it was the first office building in Southeast Asia to be fully air-conditioned, symbolizing the optimism and confidence of post-war Singapore. The building is perhaps best remembered as the site of a tragic bombing during the Indonesian-Malaysian Konfrontasi (Confrontation). Upon its completion in 1949, MacDonald House was one of the tallest buildings in Singapore and a prominent landmark on Orchard Road, which was then lined with shophouses. Before it was vacated in the early 2000s, the building housed HSBC on its lower floors, and it is now home to Citibank.
